United wins first Dundee derby in years

Johnny Russell scored twice before being sent off as Dundee United eased to a 3-0 victory over newly promoted Dundee on Sunday in their first competitive derby in seven years.

Gavin Gunning's header put United ahead in the 14th minute before Russell netted twice in three minutes just before halftime.

Both teams had to play the final 20 minutes a man short after tackles between Dundee captain Stephen O'Donnell and Russell sparked a melee. When order was restored both Russell and O'Donnell were sent off.

United has the early lead in the Scottish Premier League, with a one-point advantage over Hearts despite playing a game less.

On Saturday, defending champion Celtic was held to a 1-1 draw by Ross County, relying on a Kris Commons leveler in the third minute of injury time to save a point.

Richard Brittain put County ahead with a free kick on 49 minutes, the first ever top flight goal in the club's history. Commons equalized with the last kick of the game from five yards out.

Elsewhere, Hearts drew 2-2 with Inverness while Motherwell recorded a 2-1 victory away at Kilmarnock. Aberdeen beat St Johnstone 2-1 and Hibernian recorded its first win of the season by the same score against St Mirren.

In the fourth tier, Rangers came from behind to beat East Stirlingshire 5-1 at Ibrox in front of a record fourth division crowd of 49 118.
