Roy names youthful squad for friendly
England manager Roy Hodgson has put the emphasis on youth with his squad for the friendly against Italy in Bern on August 15, with John Terry, Wayne Rooney and captain Steven Gerrard among the names left out.
Tottenham Hotspur pair Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore and Chelsea's Ryan Bertrand are called up for the first time, whilst Manchester United's Michael Carrick receives his first call-up since 2010 and is joined by Old Trafford teammate Tom Cleverley.
Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy will have another opportunity to impress after injury ruled him out of Euro 2012 and Birmingham City's Jack Butland will be hoping to pick up his first England cap after representing Team GB at the Olympics.
Chelsea's Terry was free to play in the game despite being charged by the Football Association for using racially abusive language during a clash with Queens Park Rangers' Anton Ferdinand at Loftus Road last year.
However, with Chelsea facing Manchester City in the Community Shield at Villa Park on Sunday, Hodgson has decided to leave him out.
Other members of England's Euro 2012 squad to be left out include Ashley Cole, Joleon Lescott, Scott Parker, Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck.
The match, which will be played at the Stade de Suisse in the Swiss capital, is a rematch of the sides' meeting in the quarterfinals of Euro 2012 in Kiev in June.
On that occasion, Italy won 4-2 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.
