Phiri elated after Flames victory

Malawi Flames coach Kinnah Phiri praised his players for their resilience and team work after they beat Eritrea 3-2 in an entertaining match on Thursday.

Phiri who has been under pressure from his federation was not deterred by the soggy pitch after heavy rains pounded Kampala and decided to go ahead with the game instead of waiting for a board room decision and finally his resolve paid off handsomely with a win.

"It is true that we were under pressure to perform but i am happy my players rose up to the occasion and got the crucial three points despite Eritrea also giving us a run for our money. It has not been easy but i am happy the group is now open for competition since Rwanda also lost and now we need to give our best against the stubborn Zanzibar."

"We have hopes of getting to the quarter finals and going all the way to the finals but hopefully the rains will subside so that we can have a good game which we are used to," Phiri told supersport.com.
