SuperSport goal blitz sinks Sudanese

SuperSport United of South Africa reached the CAF Confederation Cup play-offs in spectacular style at the weekend with a 4-0 thrashing of Al Ahly Shendy of Sudan.

Beaten 3-2 in Sudan last weekend, the Pretoria club triumphed convincingly at home through goals from Tefu Mashamaite, Zimbabwean Kingston Nkhatha and Aubrey Modiba.

An Eltayeb Abaker own-goal completed a miserable last-32 second leg for the visitors as they made a fifth consecutive exit at the qualifying stage.

Three of the goals came within eight minutes either side of halftime and Modiba later completed the rout.

Coached by England-born former South Africa and Finland boss Stuart Baxter, SuperSport are back in the play-offs of the African equivalent of the Europa League after a six-year absence.

United form part of a three-prong South African challenge with Platinum Stars and Wits, all of whom hope to go one step further than compatriots and 2015 runners-up Orlando Pirates.

Platinum edged Vipers of Uganda 3-2 overall while Wits are among the clubs demoted from the CAF Champions League after losing last-32 ties.

Swaziland football followers were celebrating after Mbabane Swallows became the first club from the southern Africa kingdom to reach the play-offs.

Swallows trounced Azam of Tanzania 3-0 at home with Wonder Nhleko and Lucky Hlatjwako scoring within 10 minutes during the second half to complete the rout.

CS Sfaxien of Tunisia, Confederation Cup title-holders a record three times, cruised into the next round as expected.

Leading Young Sports Academy of Cameroon by five goals after the first leg, Sfaxien came from behind in Douala to draw 1-1 with Yassine Meriah equalising.

A miserable day for Cameroonian club was completed when Apejes Mfou were also eliminated despite winning 1-0 at home to ASEC Mimosas of the Ivory Coast.

The play-offs draw in Cairo Tuesday will pair the Confederation Cup last-32 winners with the Champions League last-32 losers.
