Kudos to Gor for a great season

As a football journalist I have never been inclined to support any particular team in the Tusker Premier League. However, credit should go where it’s due and I personally feel the team of the year was definitely Gor Mahia also popularly known as Kogalo or the Green Army.

I know genuine football fans will concur with me in this point as I hold no brief for anybody. Gor Mahia started the league in total chaos losing game after game and at one time they were among the bottom teams. That soon changed with the arrival of the Croat Zradvko Logarusic, whose impact was immediate as he made several changes to the team.

Finding themselves in the relegation zone was the lowest point for the mighty Kogalo, the former Mandela Cup winners and one of the most famous clubs in Africa. But suddenly good results started coming by. The team slowly but surely regained its lost rhythm and winning formula getting win after win to finally be one of the top title contenders coming from zeros to heroes.

The arrival of Dan Serunkuma fired up the team as he immediately gelled with another wonder boy Rama Salim, wreaking havoc on defences and scoring fantastic goals at will and that was the beginning of the rise and rise of mighty Kogalo.

When I talk about the rise of Kogalo it would be a sin not to talk about most passionate fans that never gave up even when the team was going down .The Green Army fans held on despite the ridicule from other set of fans as they gave the team 100 percent support. And for this the Kogalo fans deserve commendation for not giving up on their team.

Zradvko Logarusic to me is the coach of the year as he gave the players a reason to believe in themselves in times of defeat. The players never disappointed as they slowly picked up the pieces and the winning streak started once again.

The entire Gor Mahia team was exceptional but two players stood out among the rest that is Ugandan import Dan Serunkuma and Rama Salim who became a lethal combination but Dan Serunkuma who has so far scored 17 goals was so exciting as he mesmerized the crowds with his silky skills despite his soft demeanour and for me he is surely the player of the year in the Tusker Premier league.

As the league comes to its penultimate end I can only hope for a better 2013 season while once again giving Kogalo players, technical bench and fans the Kudos they deserve.
