Beware of fake agents

The dream of many young footballers in East Africa is to make it to the paid ranks of professional football in Europe, however many of the dreams are shattered at a young age.

I am perturbed by the new trend developing in East Africa where some unscrupulous people, masquerading as football agents, destabilise the careers of the young lads by promising them fame and riches, which are never achieved, leading to heartache for the players.

Fifa regulations require that a genuine agent has to be registered by the local federation and has to be in the Fifa player’s agent list but this fundamental rule is being overlooked as people are emerging from different corners in the world to take advantage of the players.

Many of the so called “agents” have a poor background in football and what they do is go round signing players and giving them fake contracts that only benefit themselves. Since the players do not understand or have anybody to guide them, they are duped and come back home crestfallen and demoralised.

Many talents have been shattered and players turned into paupers as they come back in the country with very low self-esteem, hence killing talents that could have been valuable for the country in the future.

I believe it’s time to come up with stringent mechanisms that will see this come to an end and to save our football players from these con-men.

Our players must also be educated on the importance of not signing documents aimlessly and in a hurry and instead they should insist on a legal mind to peruse through to avoid future embarrassment.

The federations across East Africa should also take note of the new developments by blacklisting the so-called “prophets of doom”, who are only interested in enriching themselves at the expense of the innocent players.

I know of several players who are languishing in abject poverty just because some people who are not recognised approached them and signed shoddy deals and at the end they came back suffering and moaning.

I believe a good player agent has no secrets to keep and is identifiable by checking their names in the Fifa player’s agent list. The players need to be patient and avoid circumstances that will end their careers prematurely.
