Gerrard 'flattered' by writers' honour

Steven Gerrard said he felt "flattered" to be given a gala tribute dinner by England's Football Writers' Association (FWA).

Liverpool and England captain Gerrard, the FWA's Footballer of the Year in 2009, speaking before the dinner in his honour at London's Savoy Hotel on Sunday, said: "Tonight's award means a lot because these guys have followed me throughout my career, written about me whenever I have played, to receive this award from the Football Writers' Association is a very proud night for myself and my family.

"I feel very flattered and humbled to receive it."

The 32-year-old midfielder added: "I have always looked at personal awards as a bit of a bonus really. I always try to achieve things with Liverpool or fight to do well for England."

Gerrard has been on the field for every minute of all of Liverpool's Premier League matches this season and scored in Saturday's 5-0 rout of Norwich at Anfield.

Having won 100 caps for his country, Gerrard is now looking to lead England to a place at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
