Remy move to Newcastle confirmed

Marseille have reached agreement in principle on a transfer to Newcastle for striker Loic Remy for a fee believed to be in the region of 10 million euros, a club source said on Sunday.

"We have reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle and we have given Loic permission to hold talks with them. We are now waiting on developments," a source close to the French club told AFP.

Newcastle have been after the 26-year-old France international, who earlier turned down fellow English Premier League strugglers Queens Park Rangers despite a bigger wage offer, for some weeks.

One-time Tottenham target Remy has struggled for fitness this season, scoring just once in 12 games.

But Marseille's controversial English midfielder Joey Barton believes a move to Tyneside will revitalise him.

Barton, 30, tweeted his best wishes to Remy.

"Good luck to Loic Remy in Newcastle. Don't worry I've told him what to expect. Great guy. Perfect club for him," tweeted Barton.

Remy, capped 17 times, will be joining a Newcastle side that are just two points above the relegation zone, though a drab 0-0 draw at Norwich on Saturday ended a run of four consecutive defeats.
