Spurs confirm Adebayor going to Afcon

Tottenham have dismissed a report suggesting that influential striker Emmanuel Adebayor had changed his mind about competing at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Friday's L'Equipe newspaper in France suggested the Togo captain had told national coach Didier Six that he had changed his mind about playing in South Africa.

According to L'Equipe Adebayor was upset that Six's squad of 23 players was different to the squad eventually announced by the Togo Football Federation (FTF) on Wednesday.

According to Tottenham, the situation regarding the striker remained unchanged.

"He's in the squad for QPR tomorrow (Saturday) and will then join up with the Togo squad after the game," a spokesman told AFP.

Gabriel Ameyi, FTF president, was taken aback at this latest twist in the 'will he wont he' saga ahead of the January 19-February 10 competition.

"Adebayor clearly said that he would be at the Nations Cup. I was a little surprised this morning to learn that he wouldn't be going," Ameyi told the FTF's website.

On Wednesday Spurs released a statement which read: "The Club can confirm that Emmanuel Adebayor has been called up by the Togo FA for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

"The striker will be available for this weekend's fixture against Queens Park Rangers before travelling out to South Africa to meet up with his international teammates ahead of the championships."

Adebayor, 28, had originally been planning to skip the tournament in a dispute over unpaid player bonuses and team security.

Adebayor survived an attack on the team bus by separatists seeking independence for the oil-rich Cabinda enclave which killed three people before the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola.
