Reading re-sign defender Shorey

Premier League newboys Reading re-signed former England defender Nicky Shorey on a free transfer on Tuesday.

Shorey agreed a one-year contract with the Royals after being released by West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old first played for Reading between 2001 and 2008, making 286 appearances before joining Aston Villa.

Shorey, who won two England caps, will link-up with Brian McDermott's Championship-winning squad as they prepare for the club's first season in the top-flight since 2008.

Royals chairman John Madejski said: "I would like to welcome Nicky back to Reading, he was an outstanding player here once before and we are looking forward to him triumphing even more this time around.

"I know the manager was very keen to have Nicky back, that makes a huge difference and so good luck to him once again."
