Somma comeback delayed by rain

Davide Somma’s long awaited comeback from injury was delayed this past week when Leeds United’s reserve fixture against Wigan Athletic was cancelled due to heavy rain.

The Bafana Bafana was due to feature in the match, ending 18 months on the sidelines with a knee injury.

Leeds coach Neil Warnock admits he and the player were disappointed, but says they will use Somma in another reserve fixture against Birmingham City on Wednesday.

“He was going to have half-an-hour in the game on Tuesday but it was called off. There’s another game planned for next week so with any luck he’ll be involved then,” Warnock told reporters.

“He’s exactly the sort of player you want to have on the bench but everyone knows how long he’s been out for. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him too soon.”

Somma’s comeback has suffered a number of set-backs. He had initially hoped to be ready for the start of this season.

His lack of action ends any hopes he would have had of being part of Bafana coach Gordon Igesund’s squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
