Ngcongca finishes season in Belgium

Bafana Bafana fullback Anele Ngcongca will finish his league season in Belgium on Sunday but his hopes of helping Racing Genk to the Uefa Champions League again have been already been dashed.

Ngcongca, who has been one of the mainstays of the unfashionable provincial club’s ascent to the top of Belgian football in recent years, could also be playing his last game in Belgium.

Their match on Sunday away at AA Ghent, the club who bought Valery Nahayo from Kaizer Chiefs last year, is their final one of the post-season play-off campaign.

Genk had been hoping to finish as runners-up to already crowned champions Anderlecht but a loss last Thursday to Club Brugge means they finish third.

Ngcongca’s club have 41 points to 49 for Anderlecht and 45 for runners-up Brugge. The top two finishers in Belgium qualify to compete in next season’s Uefa Champions League but Genk have to now console themselves with a place in the Uefa Europa League next season.

They made it to the group phase of the Champions League this season where they were in the same group as finalists Chelsea.

The 24-year-old from Gugulethu has been at Genk for almost five years and still has two more years left on his contract.

But there is growing speculation in the Belgian media that he will be heralded to turkey next season.

Ngcongca has long been on the shopping list of Turkish clubs, particularly since impressing in friendly matches against local opposition when Genk have been to Turkey for their pre-season and winter training camps.
