Mahlangu wins Super Cup

Trophy success continued for Bafana Bafana star May Mahlangu on Saturday as he helped his Helsingborg side lift the Swedish Super Cup.

Helsingborg defeated last year’s League runners-up AIK Stockholm 2-0 with Mahlangu involved throughout in his usual creative midfield position.

Both goals were scored by the Dutchman Rachid Bouaouzan and it now means Helsingborg have won the last five trophies on offer in Sweden, having also retained their FA Cup trophy at the end of 2011 and won the League as well.

The club now kick-off the defence of their Swedish league title with an away trip to Norrköping on April 2.

Saturday’s win caps a fantastic 12 months for Mahlangu in which he helped his club side win the Swedish League and Cup ‘Double’, and was also named Player of the Year in the Allsvenskan.

To cap that off, he received international recognition and played his first match for Bafana Bafana in the 0-0 draw with Equatorial Guinea in January, before appearing against Senegal as well at the end of February.

Helsingborg have already conceded that it is unlikely they will be able to hold on to him when the European transfer window re-opens in July, with Dutch giants Feyenoord and Ajax Amsterdam, as well as Spanish La Liga club Villarreal, said to be interested. And just last month Turkish side Galatasaray admitted they would be monitoring the player as well.
