Serero admits to frustrations
Bafana Bafana international Thulani Serero was not in the Ajax Amsterdam squad that lost 4-2 to Feyenoord on Sunday … and admits he is growing impatient.
Serero seems to have taken a step backwards over the past few months after initially being a regular off the bench for manager Frank de Boer, including playing in the Uefa Champions League against Real Madrid.
But after being out through injury for three months, Serero has featured just twice since September. Although he knows he needs to be patient, he admits he is finding it hard.
"Of course I want to play," Serero said. "I am a very impatient guy, but I am trying to be patient now. The trainer [De Boer] says I will get my chance and that I must do my best to learn.
“He also says there are a lot of the people in my position to play, like Christian Eriksen, Theo Janssen and Siem de Jong."
The 21-year-old was disappointed to miss out on the chance to come up against compatriot Kamohelo Mokotjo, who starred for Feyenoord in the win.
It is a role reversal for the pair, with Mokotjo initially struggling for chance this season but now having secured a first-team spot with the Moroccan Karim El Ahmadi at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, while Serero has gone from game-time to idle.
But he remains positive and sets himself a target, "When Ajax play Feyenoord next season I want to be in the starting line."
