Claasen close to his goals target

Bafana Bafana midfielder Daylon Claasen says he has almost reached his goal of goals for the season, after bagging a fourth of the league campaign for his under fire Belgian club at the weekend.

Claasen got the winner for relegation-threatened Lierse against second place AA Ghent with the 2-1 triumph lifting Lierse seven points clear of the drop zone.

“I was joking at the beginning of the season when I said that my target was five goals for the campaign and now I am right there in terms of reaching it,” he said in the wake of the surprise triumph against a Ghent side that left the former Kaizer Chiefs defender Valery Nahayo out of the team.

“It was very important that we won. We worked very hard against Ghent and we deserved our triumph. It was perhaps not the best game that Ghent have played but that was also because of the way we played. In defence we did really well and that kept us in the game and set us up for the win,” he added.

Last season Claasen scored twice in 28 league and cup games for Lierse, so has already doubled that tally.

Siboniso Gaxa and Lance Davids also started the game for Lierse – Davids despite leaving the club before their final game before Christmas to go on holiday in Cape Town.
