Pienaar relief at first Prem appearance

Bafana Bafana skipper admitted his relief at getting his first English Premiership minutes this season after coming off the bench in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 home win over Everton on Wednesday.

A mixture of injury and form has meant that ‘Schillo’ had gone through the first six months of the season without appearing in the Premiership for Spurs, his only appearances coming in the Uefa Europa League and FA Cup against minnows Cheltenham Town.

And so his appearance for the final 12 minutes of Wednesday’s win, which moves Spurs level with second-placed Manchester United in the table, is a big step forward for the player who has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane in this transfer window.

“Great result tonight to put us tied 2nd in the league. Happy to get some game tonight and I really enjoyed playing in the league again,” the 29-year-old tweeted.

Next up for Spurs is a home meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, a game in which Pieenar might expect to get more game-time, before a potentially massive game in the title-race away at Manchester City on January 22.
