France's Euro 2000 winning coach Roger Lemerre was sacked on Tuesday as coach of the Moroccan national team just a year after being appointed, a senior member of the Moroccan Football Federation told AFP.

The 68-year-old, who was also sacked by France after they exited in the first round of the 2002 World Cup when they were defending champions, was slammed by the official for his general behaviour.

"He (Lemerre) failed in his mission and the public no longer want him in the post," the official told AFP under condition of anonymity.

"Therefore, added to the difficult relations he has with the press we are in the middle of discussing terms for his departure.

"The sports authorities are really disappointed by the work done by Lemerre at the head of a team in a country where football is considered king.

"Every time the team has played, the public have booed him constantly.

"The ongoing talks with Lemerre surround the financial details of his leaving.

"The two parties are close to coming to an agreement over these.

The French coach also wants a change of scene."

Morocco are struggling both to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa and the African Nations Cup - which Lemerre won in 2004 with Tunisia - in Angola also next year as they lie fourth behind Gabon, Togo and Cameroon.
