For other Manchester United players Wednesday's Champions League game against Besiktas might be a weary ritual, but for Jonny Evans it is another chance to impress.

United have already qualified for the knockout stage, and are playing only to secure top spot in the group, something they will achieve if they win and Wolfsburg fail to beat CSKA in Moscow.

But Evans is keen to take advantage of Rio Ferdinand's on-going back problems to further his already impressive reputation.

"I played over 30 games last season, which was more than I expected," the 21 year old said.

"It is great to get those games under your belt. But I know I still need to improve as there are some fantastic players here." The Northern Ireland international came to prominence in two loan spells at Sunderland, but opted to return to United to battle for a first-team place.

Playing for Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager, is clearly part of the appeal.

"It is very rare for him to say anything bad about his players," he told BBC Northern Ireland.

"He always gives them 100 per cent backing. It is great to have that from a manager.

"You have to be on your toes as well as you cannot upset him.

"You have seen what he has done in the past. If you are taking your eye off the ball, he will get rid of you.

""He treats everyone as men. Everyone has got to deal with certain situations but if you need to go to him, he is there for you."

Evans's team-mates have been impressed by his maturity, with Ryan Giggs predicting a big future for the Northern Ireland international.

"The performances he has put in, he looks as though he has played there 10 years," Giggs said.

"He has come into a team that has a centre-half partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

"If one of them is not playing and Jonny comes in, to say you don't miss one of those players, is a great compliment to him and it is true as well."
