Former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn nearly came to blows with a speaker at a tumultuous election of president of his hometown club Karlsruhe.

Kahn, whose father Ralf ran unsuccessfully for the position, wanted to take the microphone before the ballot. But a club member who had been addressing the gathering wouldn't let him, requiring security personnel to jump in to prevent a brawl.

"That's football - emotions play a great role," Kahn said after the incident late on Wednesday.

Kahn began his career in Karlsruhe, now in the second division, before becoming a star for Bayern Munich and Germany.

The 40-year-old Kahn retired two years ago. He became a member of Karlsruhe a few days ago and was campaigning on his father's behalf. Of the four candidates, Ralf Kahn received the fewest votes.
