Traore back to support Stallions

Burkina Faso soccer prodigy Alain Traore has returned to South Africa from France ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final of Sunday to watch his side play against Nigeria at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

The FC Lorient striker, who pulled out of the tournament following a thigh injury during the group phase, said he was thrilled at the Stallions’ historic qualification to the final and wanted to witness the event.

“I’m very glad to see our team come this far and you can’t expect me to miss it,” the 25-year-old said.

“I will not be playing because of my injury but will help inspire the team to an eventual victory. Nigeria are a robust side but we believe if we put up the same spirit like we did against Ghana in the semis we could carry the day.”

Traore was one of the top scorers with three goals before his exit from the competition, which many thought would deplete his side, but they were able to climb to the final without the services of the former Auxerre player.
