Igesund faces striker shortage

Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund may have just two fit strikers for Sunday’s crunch 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Group A decider against Morocco.

Igesund has already stated that he will not use Lehlohonolo Majoro in the match after the goal-hero of Wednesday’s win over Angola required stitches for a gash on his calf.

And now it has emerged that Tokelo Rantie is also a major doubt for the match with an ankle injury. His chances of making the fixture are slim.

That leaves Katlego Mphela almost certain to start up front, with Bernard Parker either just behind him in a more withdrawn role, or possibly kept back on the bench as a second half replacement for the Mamelodi Sundowns man.

Rantie sat out Friday’s training session ahead of the match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, having been assessed by Bafana team doctor Carl Tabane.

It will be a worry for Igesund, with Mphela having spent much of the first half of this season out injured, while Parker carries with him a permanent ankle niggle that he plays through.

Bafana must avoid defeat to Morocco on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the competition, or if they are to lose, must hope then that Cape Verde do not beat Angola in the other match in the pool.
