Tigre closes to within point of Boca



Tigre defeated San Lorenzo 3-1 on Sunday to move within a point of Boca Juniors at the top of Argentina's Clausura championship with two rounds of matches remaining.

Boca Juniors is hoping to complete a sweep of Argentina's two split-season titles, but was held to a 1-1 draw at Banfield on Saturday. Arsenal also moved to within one point of Boca this weekend, winning 3-1 against Argentinos on Friday.

In other Sunday matches it was: All Boys 3, Estudiantes 1; Olimpo 2, Lanus 2; Godoy Cruz 2, Belgrano 1.

An own goal from Banfield*s Santiago Ladino handed Boca the equalizer in the 50th minute, four minutes after Agustin Alayes had headed the opener for Banfield.

The game swung in Boca*s favor in the 4th, when Banfield player Rodrigo Pepe was sent off, but the famous Buenos Aires club couldn*t take advantage.

The draw moved Boca to 33 points in first, with Tigre ahead of Arsenal in second on goal difference. Newell*s is another point back on 31 in fourth.

Boca faces Universidad de Chile on Thursday in the semifinal first leg of the Copa Libertadores, looking to win its seventh title in the continental competition.

Boca is also in the final of the Copa Argentina, where it will face Racing, although the date has not yet been announced.

On Sunday, Roman Martinez got two second-half goals to secure the win for Tigre. Ezequiel Maggiolo had opened the scoring in the 35th, with Leandro Romagnoli pulling one back in the 62nd for San Lorenzo, which is in danger of being relegated from the first division.

Eduardo Dominguez, Jonathan Ferrari and Mauro Matos all scored for All Boys, with Gaston Fernandez converting from the penalty spot for Estudiantes.

Lanus got an early goal when Mario Regueiro scored a penalty in the 3rd and added a second in the 38th, but already-relegated Olimpo leveled the scores in the second half through Andres Franzoia and Martin Perez.

Godoy Cruz also went into halftime 2-0 ahead thanks to goals from Alvaro Navarro and Ruben Ramirez, but Belgrano could only manage a late consolation through Claudio Perez.

In Saturday matches it was: Union 0, San Martin 0; Newell*s 2, Independiente 1; Velez 2, Rafaela 1.

Racing plays Colon on Monday in the last fixture in this round of matches.
