Wahbi Khazri opts for Tunisia
French-born SC Bastia attacking midfielder Wahbi Khazri has made a nationality switch for Tunisia after having represented France in the junior category.
Tunisia coach Sami Trabelsi announced on Thursday the 21-year-old player had become a member of the Eagles of Carthage and would likely be part of his squad for January’s Africa Cup of Nations.
A week after another French-born of Tunisian descent Wissam Ben Yedder of French Ligue 1 side Toulouse refused to switch allegiance in favour Tunisia, officials in Algiers say Khazri’s decision is a relief and will bring fresh blood to the outfit.
Tunisia will open their campaign against fellow North Africans Algeria on January 22 in Rustenburg before facing other Group D members Ivory Coast and Togo.
