Gerhardt joins Melbourne Heart

Liberia international Patrick Gerhardt has completed a two-year deal with Australian A-League side Melbourne Heart after a brief spell at Bosnian club Zeljeznicar.

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder was born in Switzerland and has represented the country in junior competitions, but switched allegiance last year to play for Liberia, through his heritage.

“Patrick will bring a lot to the club. Defensive midfield is the position we see him most suited to, but he's versatile. He played in Bosnia last year and won the double, so he brings a winning mentality,” said John Aloisi, Heart’s head coach.

“I'm happy to be here. I've seen a lot of nice things here at Melbourne Heart and in the city itself, so I'm confident I'll be happy here in Melbourne,” Gerhardt said.

“I had a good experience in Bosnia. We had a great team and enjoyed a fantastic season, losing only a couple of games, but I'm excited by the challenge ahead in Australia.”

Liberia qualified to the second round of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations following their 1-0 aggregate win over Namibia in the first round.
