SA provides glittering closing ceremony

Former Bafana Bafana player Mark Fish began the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) closing ceremony at the National Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Fish, a member of the South African side that won the 1996 Afcon tournament, said a few words before dancers came on the field to start the ceremony.

Children ran onto the rainbow canvas-covered field and formed two massive circles. Later two jets flew over the stadium.

After a brief fireworks display, a mass of performers entered the stadium, forming the outline of the African continent to the cheers of the crowd.

Two small taxi structures also appeared, while an urban African scene was created. The taxis 'drove' down a specially created road.

Performers in road-workers' outfits danced next to traffic lights, behind a skyline of a city.

The dancers then made a new formation and the South African flag could be seen along with the letters 'SA'.

Later, two signs of 'Celebrate Africa' were moved – one along the field and one to the stands.

The ceremony, which lasted a little more than 40 minutes, concluded with performers making a large circle around the Nigeria and Burkina Faso flags and a fireworks display.
