SuperSport, Maritzburg in dull draw

SuperSport United were held to a goalles draw by Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership encounter at the Lucas Masterpiece Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville on Tuesday evening.

Both sides lacked the killer touch in front of goal and were unable to climb further up the table as a result.

SuperSport United got off to a flying start, nearly finding the back off the net 12 seconds into the game. Sameehg Doutie played a precise ball to Bradley Grobler inside the area but the former Goztepe man could only manage to drag his resulting effort inches wide of Shuaib Walters right hand upright.

Grobler and Doutie teamed up well through the early exchanges with especially the latter being a constant threat to the Team of Choice down the right flank.

Maritzburg United fans had to wait to the 36th minute to witness their sides first real chance on goal. Delron Buckley’s well struck effort looked destined for the back of the net but he was denied by the head of Edwin Gyimah.

Cuthbert Malajila nearly opened the scoring for The Team of Choice a minute before the break. The Zimbabwean beat the offside before making a great run towards goal but he could only manage to power his shot agonisingly wide of Ronwen Williams' goal.

Despite the explosive start to the game Matsatsantsa were unable to create any clear cut chances for the rest of the half while United only started firing towards the end of the half.

The second stanza started off slowly as both sides looked to be suffering from tired legs as the end of the season draws closer

Doutie and Grobler once again linked up well just after the hour mark, the winger shook his marker and played a delightful ball into the area but Grobler was only able to direct a tame effort straight at the Maritzburg shot stopper.

Second half substitute Jabu Maluleke had a great chance to steal all three points for the home side on the 90 minute mark.

The midfielder weaved his way through the Maritzburg defence before trying to curl a shot into the back of the net but he could only manage to miscue his shot wide off Walters goal.

The sides couldn’t repeat their exciting meeting in the Nedbank Cup the week before were Matsatsantsa ran out eventual 2-1 winners on the day.

The draw means that both sides remain where they are on the log, SuperSport in fifth and Maritzburg in sixth.
