Manzini out for rest of season

Bloemfontein Celtic striker Lerato Manzini will play no further part in his team’s season after suffering a broken foot, the club have announced.

It is a major blow for Celtic to lose their leading goal scorer for the season.

Manzini’s seven league goals plus one more in cup competition this season makes him the stand out striker for the club.

The injured happened two weeks ago but the nuggety forward continued to play on with a broken metatarsal bone in his foot.

He featured in two matches since suffering the injury, working his way through the pain after being employed as a substitute, before the club’s medical staff decided that he should get the bone healed and rested.

Manzini has been the author of some vital goals for Celtic his season, including one in the 3-2 win over provincial rivals Free State Stars in the Telkom Knockout semifinals. But he did not play in December’s final win over Mamelodi Sundowns in Durban.

It is only the second season in the Premier Soccer League for the 21-year-old.

Bloemfontein Celtic, meanwhile, are hoping to have Kurt Lentjies back for the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal tie against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday.

He suffered a hamstring strain in the draw with Pretoria University last week. A scan revealed that the midfielder did not tear or strain his hamstring as badly as the medical staff first believed and a club statement said he should be fit and raring to go for the Chiefs game.
