Wits to sign Zimbabwe's star of year
BidVest Wits are on the brink of signing Denver Mukamba, who was named Zimbabwe’s best player last year.
The international midfielder arrived in Johannesburg at the start of the week to complete his contract negotiations after a deal with his club Dynamos was successfully concluded, club officials confirmed.
Mukamba, who has just turned 20, is among the first major signings of the transfer window but the deal to take him to Wits had been negotiated over the last months.
Mukamba had impressed on trials with Johannesburg club at the end of the Zimbabwe season, where Harare-based Dynamos won the league and cup double for a second successive year.
Mukamba won the prestigious ‘Soccer Star of the Year’ award last month as well as R40 000 cash prize. He was also second in the Zimbabwe league goalscoring charts with 11 strikes for Dynamos.
In 2011 he won the ‘Rookie of the Year’ award
Mukamba had several previous trips to South Africa for trials with PSL clubs, including Wits in mid-year, but they proved unsuccessful.
But he went home to emerge as the best player in the Zimbabwe league and this time Wits have moved swiftly to add him to their roster.
Mukamba made his debut for Zimbabwe in November 2011 when the Warriors came from behind to beat Bafana Bafana in a friendly at the Rufaro Stadium in Harare.
