Dikwena pip Bucs, Chiefs to Q2 title

Following the completion of the first half of the 2012/13 PSL season, Kaizer Chiefs continue to top the standings despite a 1-1 draw against the University of Pretoria in Round 15 of the Absa Premiership, while Platinum Stars’1-0 win over SuperSport United saw them crowned Q2 champions.

The Mighty Amakhosi topped the log after round one of the season and have not given up their place at the top of the pile since.

On the weekend Chiefs maintained a one point lead over second placed Orlando Pirates as they shared the spoils with AmaTuks. George Lebese scored his first official league goal to give Chiefs the lead before Mame Niang restored parity as the sides took a point each.

With the result Chiefs sit in first place in the league with 32 points while Tuks lie in sixth on 22 points.

The weekend’s action got underway on Friday night with a 55th minute goal from Andile Jali proving to be the winner for Orlando Pirates as the Buccaneers beat Maritzburg United 2-1.

The three points keeps Pirates close on the heels of their Soweto rivals in second place on 31 points while the loss for Maritzburg was their third in a row and sees them drop to fifth on the table with 23 points.

The first game on Saturday afternoon saw the two teams at the bottom of the log lock horns, but neither could show their dominance as Chippa United and AmaZulu played to a 1-1 draw. AmaZulu continue to hold up the bottom of the table on 12 points, but are only behind Chippa in 15th (on the same number of points) due to goal difference.

Free State Stars were able to register their second win in a row thanks to a 90th minute goal from Thapelo Mkhatshwa which handed them a 2-1 win over Black Leopards. The win moved the Ea Lla Koto into fourth place on the log with 24 points while Leopards sit in 12th spot on 16 points.

The team in form is definitely Platinum Stars and a solitary penalty goal from Henrico Botes was enough to hand them a 1-0 win over SuperSport United and thus crown them the Q2 champions.

With the win Stars continue to remain in the hunt for the league title, currently sitting in third spot on the log with 31 points while United’s second loss of the season saw them drop out of the top eight into ninth place with 17 points.

Mamelodi Sundowns have also found some form under coach Pitso Mosimane and registered their second consecutive win under his tenure when they beat Bidvest Wits 2-0 on Saturday night.

The Brazilians have now jumped further away from the relegation zone into 10th place on the standings with 17 points while the loss for the Clever Boys dropped them into eighth spot with 18 points.

The final two matches on Sunday saw Bloemfontein Celtic hand Moroka Swallows their fifth loss in a row after goals from Lerato Manzini and Letladi Madubanya saw the Phunya Sele Sele come from behind to win 2-1.

Celtic moved into the top eight into seventh place with the win while Swallows continue to plummet down the table and currently lie third from bottom, only two points outside of the relegation zone.

The final match of the weekend saw Golden Arrows put Ajax Cape Town to the sword as goals from Ntlantla Zothwane and Bonginkosi Ntuli handed the KZN side a 2-0 win. Arrows are in 11th spot on the log while Ajax’s eighth loss of the season sees them in 13th place.
