Pruijn not concerned over position

Ajax Cape Town coach Jan Pruijn says he is not concerned about his job title or the status of his position at Ajax Cape Town, where he remains as caretaker coach.

With Cape Town’s other club Chippa United on Tuesday changing the status of Farouk Abrahams from caretaker to permanent, questions over Pruijn’s role at Ajax have surfaced again but the 54-year-old Dutchman has moved swiftly to temper the discussion.

“I know exactly my position at Ajax and I’m not focused on anything else but doing my job,” said Pruijn, who has won three of the nine matchers he has taken charge of since replacing the sacked Maarten Stekelenburg in October.

“I know exactly what I’m doing and believe I can stay on until the end of the season.”

Initially Pruijn had tried to force the hand of the club by demanding after his third game in charge – a goalless draw against Mamelodi Sundowns – he no longer wanted to remain in an interim role but rather wanted Ajax to make a decision whether he would get the job permanently or not. Pruijn was looking for a two year deal.

But he has since backtracked from that threat and continued in the job, albeit still as caretaker coach.

In the mean time Ajax have appointed Jan Versteijen, who was their initial choice to replace Stekelenburg, as their technical director although Versteijen has made it clear he wants the Ajax first team job.
