Pirates reach points milestone
Orlando Pirates reached a milestone with their 1-0 win over Platinum Stars on Saturday afternoon, taking their all-time PSL points tally to 900.
The Buccaneers join Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs on that mark after the latter achieved it with their 0-0 draw at Free State Stars on September 1. The AmaKhosi can move ahead of Bucs if they get something from their game in hand against Black Leopards on Wednesday.
The win over Dikwena was achieved via an Andile Jali penalty, which also broke the champions’ dismal run of over 450 minutes (seven-and-a-half hours) without a goal in all competitions.
Remarkably, after 16 seasons of the PSL, both Chiefs and Pirates went into this campaign with identical records – 504 games played, 244 wins, 161 draws and 99 losses.
Pirates suffered their 100th defeat at the hands of Moroka Swallows on a fortnight ago, while Chiefs have yet to reach that mark having started this League campaign unbeaten.
They currently lead the all-time points tally for the PSL, with Mamelodi Sundowns in third on 888. Some way behind them are SuperSport United with 786.
Bucs have netted 723 goals to Chiefs’ 713 (Sundowns are the overall leaders with 743), while they have conceded 439 to Chiefs 417. The leakiest defence in the history of the PSL is Moroka Swalows, who have let in 614.
