Chiefs, Stars in top-spot battle

It is still early days in the Absa Premiership but both Kaizer Chiefs and Free State Stars are placing a lot of emphasis on their top of the table clash, according to players from both camps.

The match is scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoon at the Charles Mopeli stadium, kick-off at 15h00.

After two games into the 2012/13 league season only the Mighty Amakhosi and Stars have collected maximum points with wins in both their opening two fixtures, and consequently lie first and second on the league table.

Chiefs top the standings due to goal difference after an impressive 6-0 win over AmaZulu in their first league match and then a hard fought 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in their second match.

And according to their attacking midfielder, Siyabonga Nkosi (who has found the back of the net twice already this season), their first two games are only a sign of things to come because he believes his fellow Phefeni Glamour Boys can do much better.

“I believe from a personal point of view that the team can still reach even greater heights this season.

“We have a lot of ground to cover even though we have managed to collect maximum points in the past two games.

“Our ambition as the team this season is to win the league and it is encouraging to start in the manner we have,” said Nkosi who went on to add that it is only going to get harder for Chiefs to succeed as teams look to knock them off their pedestal.

“It is going to get tougher as the season goes on with matches coming thick and fast and we need to maintain the momentum.

“We need to take it one game at a time and we know up against Free State Stars this weekend it is not going to be easy, but we are confident going into the game and believe we can get a positive result.”

It certainly won’t be an easy game for the Soweto giants and the comments coming out of the Free State Stars camp is confirmation of that.

Presently, the Ea Lla Koto are second on the log after beating BidVest Wits 2-0 in their opening game and the securing a nail biting 2-1 win over Chippa United in their second league match.

And according to their young midfielder, Luyolo Nomandela, Stars are not looking to give up their 100 percent record just yet.

“We respect Chiefs as a team but we are not going to give them respect on the day and we know that they are good on transition and counter attacks, but we have a good plan for them,” said Nomandela.

The new Free State man, who is in his debut season in the PSL went on to add that it would be a massive personal highlight to take on the Amakhosi, but he will not let the situation overshadow the team’s goal which is to win.

“This will be the biggest highlight of my career playing against Chiefs, but I am not frightened by them. We are in the same league by the way, so I will go there and enjoy myself and fight for the win,” concluded Nomandela.
