Maritzburg head home after Jozi trip
Maritzburg United have returned home from their brief trip to Johannesburg where they went to train at altitude and play against strong opposition.
The team played three matches on successive days as part of their pre-season preparations under German coach Ernst Middendorp.
They were hoping for a fourth game on arrival on Tuesday but Kaizer Chiefs cancelled on them.
Instead they lost 2-0 to Moroka Swallows on Wednesday, drew 1-1 with SuperSport United on Thursday and on Friday beat FC AK of the National First Division 2-0. All matches were played in the morning with Middendorp then also fitting in some afternoon training sessions.
“It was a good exercise for us to work at altitude and to get in some good match practice,” said team manager Quintin Jettoo.
“It was pleasing to see how well the team acclimatised.”
Maritzburg did not use the time to try out any trialists, seemingly settled for the moment on the signings they have made in anticipation of the new campaign.
They are next in action on Sunday in the four-team tournament in Umlazi, featuring clubs from Kwazulu-Natal.
They will play AmaZulu in the first semifinal at the King Zwelithini Stadium at 10am.
