Mhlongo 'wanted a new challenge'
Latest Platinum Stars recruit Benson Mhlongo believes that his experience will inspire his fellow young teammates in Rustenburg to achieve this coming season.
The former Orlando Pirates man who endured a frustrating spell with the treble winners in the last campaign has signed a two year deal with the Royal Bafokeng side with a hope of adding some silverware to the bare trophy cabinet.
"I wanted a new challenge. I’ve done my job at Pirates, so there was nothing more to do there. The challenge starts now when I have to prove to myself that I can still do what I did ten years ago. I just want to play and win trophies,” says Mhlongo.
"My achievement is when people around me do well, change their game and gain experience from me. I’m not here to achieve alone. I’m here to guide the youngsters, if one or two youngsters progress in their career, that’s my achievements which doesn’t have a price of its own."
The lanky midfielder also added that his love for the game has actually motivated him to be an inspiration to a lot of youngsters and some value in their lives.
"As a person, comfort zone can be suicidal for an individual. One day, I wish I can talk to the young players in the country about focusing on the game. These boys are not well equipped and educated. Football can make you money but you can be down and poor again in a short space of time," the former Downs man told PSL.co.za.
The former Bucs skipper concluded by saying that he is delighted to be re-united with Cavin Johnson, having previously been under his mentorship at the Chloorkp based side.
"I’m very excited to be reunited with Coach Johnson. At Sundowns he was one of the coaches that helped me improve my game and assisted me in becoming a versatile player. I’m privileged to be part of his team and given the opportunity to work with him again I’m willing to work hard and earn my stripes," he concluded.
Mhlongo ,along with ten other players were unveiled by the Stars management with the likes of Joshua Sauls, formerly with newly promoted Cape side,Chippa United,Tintswalo Tshabalala from Black Leopards and Bonagani Nyathi who was previously with Free State Stars. The rest of the new recruits included, Tshepo Gumede, Patrick Malokase, Thabani Mthembu, Roger Majafa, Michael Mabule, Mogakolodi Ngele and Obert Moyo.
