Sundowns sign Arendse
Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the signing of defender Wayne Arendse from relegated Santos on a five-year deal.
The Mitchells Plain-born player has been rock solid for Santos in defence and, with the relegation of Santos, there has been huge interest from Premiership clubs as they scrambled for his signature but Sundowns appear to have won the contest.
The 1.9m tall central defender joins an array of defenders who are expected to play a crucial role in the team’s quest for glory. Arendse spent his entire career at Santos, coming through the ranks and has been capped once for Bafana Bafana.
The 27-year-old was due to undergo medicals late on Tuesday and he joins another new signing in Dutch defender Alje Schut from side FC Utrecht.
Schut comes from Eredivisie (Premier Division) side FC Utrecht.
The 31-year-old was captain of the Dutch side, and also played for the Dutch Under 20 side of which Sundowns coach Johan Neeskens, was assistant coach. He has penned a two year deal, with the option of a one-year renewal.
