Cosmos’ relegation woes continue

A goal by Elhadji Samb early into the second half was cancelled out by Cuthbert Malajila as Jomo Cosmos drew 1-1 with Maritzburg United in an Absa Premiership match.

Only in the 30th minute did the first real chance of the game for either side materialise.

A handball by Cosmos’ Gladwin Shitolo allowed the visitors to have a chance at goal when they received a free kick.

But the free kick attempt by Kurt Lentjies from the right channel was saved by Cosmos ‘keeper Avril Phali.

In the 38th minute Maritzburg’s Michael Morton brought down Mark Haskins and gave Cosmos an opportunity to shoot at goal. The free kick was drilled in by Haskins, but missed the target.

Then Cosmos managed to put the smiles on the faces of their supporters 10 minutes into the second half.

Elhadji Samb’s right-footed shot from 18-yards out found the bottom-right corner of the net to make it 1-0 in Cosmos’ favour in the 55th minute.

But in the 71st minute the visitors found the equaliser. Felix Obada crossed from the wing and found the head of Cuthbert Malajila, who placed the ball into the bottom-right corner of goal.

Cosmos knew the goal meant trouble for them and in the 74th minute a right-footed shot by Siyabonga Nontshinga just flew wide of goal.

The draw means that Cosmos will effectively be relegated from the Absa Premiership.
