Football | Absa Premiership

Santos’s plight worsened by Stars

Santos plunged further into the relegation abyss with a 2-1 defeat to Platinum Stars in an Absa Premiership match at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.

Santos scored first through Eleazar Rodgers, but two goals in two second half minutes won the game for the visiting team.

There was early drama as the home side suffered a ninth minute setback as Erwin Isaacs received a straight red card for a foul on Lindokuhle Mbatha.

Yet it was the Peoples’ Team who were to take the lead, Rodgers heading home at the near post after Matthew Pattison’s free-kick had taken a slight deflection.

Santos continued to create the better chances, with Tyren Arendse forcing Jackson Mabokgwane to tip his 20-yard shot over the bar.

Stars did create some positive moments, with good penetration coming from the flanks, forcing Santos keeper Pa Demba Touray to keep on his toes.

With five minutes to go before the break Jurie Basie nearly played in Pattison, but Mabokgwane came out his box quickly to win the ball.

Patrick Malokase nearly levelled matters for Dikwena in the 44th minute, but Touray did well to palm away his goal bound shot at the near post.

Stars began the second half brightly and could have had a goal in the 53rd minute, but Sipho Jembela elected to header across goal rather than at directly at it.

Henrico Botes had the next chance, after 65 minutes, but sent his short ballooning over the bar, finding himself relived afterwards to see the off-side flag was raised.

The pressure was finally to pay off for the visiting side when they earned a 70th minute penalty after Thabiso Ntloana was ruled to have fouled Malokse; Vuyo Mere converting from the spot.

Just two minutes later and Dikwena were ahead for the first time when Malokase pounced at a corner kick to nod home a corner kick.

The remainder of the game saw the Peoples’ Team giving their all in search of an equaliser, but in spite of throwing numbers forward, the visitor’s defence remained firm and saw them through to the finish line.

Nathan Paulse could well have made it three late on, but squandered a great chance after Touray had pushed forward for a corner.
