Davids gets player-coach role
Maritzburg United have elevated striker Fadlu Davids to the position of second assistant under coach Ernst Middendorp.
The 30-year-old Davids is still an integral part of the United playing staff, but will take on the role of player-coach as well after the club reshuffled its technical team following the return of Middendorp to the helm of the club.
In another move, the club has also elevated goalkeeper coach Ronnie Kanelelo to act as first assistant under Middendorp.
It means there are no first-team roles for assistants John ‘Urban’ de Kock and Aschwin Sutton, who had worked under previous coach Ian Palmer before his sacking last month.
“We are committed to empowering Fadlu while he serves under the mentorship of the experienced Middendorp,” Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia says.
“Not only has Fadlu been a great asset to the team as a player, he has also shown excellent leadership skills over the years and is very enthusiastic about this opportunity and what we can accomplish at Maritzburg United FC in the future.”
Kadodia says the club took their time over announcing the appointments after Middendorp agreed to return to the side in the middle of January.
"We were never going to rush these critical appointments as we wanted to make sure we got the right people. We couldn't be happier with Ronnie and Fadlu coming on board in these new roles and we're looking forward to having them contributing positively to the team’s success,” Kadodia added.
Maritzburg will resume their PSL season with an Absa Premiership clash away at BidVest Wits next Wednesday.
