Ajax turn down Christie, look to Emeka
Ajax Cape Town have turned down the opportunity to add Swaziland international Darren Christie to their squad, who it was recommended be signed by former coach Foppe de Haan last year.
The Urban Warriors had another look at the 27-year-old winger this past week, but will not be bringing him on board.
Christie had been set to attend trials at Free State Stars, but upon hearing of Ajax’s renewed interest, flew straight to Johannesburg where the Urban Warriors are in camp. It is understood by SuperSport.com that Stars are now no longer in the player either.
The winger had a trial with Ajax in January last year but was not picked up then despite a recommendation from De Haan that he be brought on board. The reason was that at the time still applying for his South African citizenship, as his father is from Mzansi, but the paperwork had not come through yet.
Meanwhile, Ajax continue to run their eye over Nigerian striker Joseph Emeka, who plays for the Tusker club in Kenya.
The Urban Warriors also last week turned down the chance to sign Zimbabwean forward Rodireck Mutuma after the Dynamos player had travelled to Cape Town for an assessment.
Now it is the chance of Emeka, who has joined up with the team during their Jo’burg camp.
The 23-year-old has played a leading role for the side in their recent success, helping them to the League title last season.
