McCarthy on trials at Maritzburg Utd
Maritzburg United have invited former Kaizer Chiefs defender Fabian McCarthy for trials as they seek to strengthen their central defence.
McCarthy is a free agent after being released by Moroka Swallows, where he had a fall out with management over many issues.
The experienced defender, who has turned out for clubs like Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns, was earlier linked with Platinum Stars.
McCarthy, who also represented SA at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, arrived in the Midlands on Wednesday and is said to be working his socks off to impress coach Ernst Middendorp.
Maritzburg brand manager Younis Kadodia confirmed the news, adding that Middendorp felt the need for an experienced central defender, hence McCarthy’s invitation.
“The coach invited him over for assessment because he needs someone experienced to plug the central defence slot. If the coach is happy with his conditioning, then a decision will be taken,” said Kadodia.
The Team of Choice were eyeing versatile Dereck Spencer but were scared off by Mamelodi Sundowns' price tag and the player eventually transferred to Platinum Stars.
