Ullrich rules out public confession

Former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich will not follow Lance Armstrong's example and confess to doping during his cycling career, Focus news magazine quoted him as saying in a report made available ahead of Monday's publication.

"I will certainly not follow Armstrong's path and speak before an audience of millions, even though some may be demanding that or even expect me to do so," Ullrich said.

Armstrong confessed to doping during all his seven Tour de France wins in a television interview with Oprah Winfrey broadcast on Thursday and Friday. The American was stripped of the titles last year and banned for life.

Ullrich won the Tour in 1997 and finished second five times, three of them behind Armstrong.

The German retired in 2007 and was banned retroactively in 2012 by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in connection with the Spanish probe around doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.

While several of his former teammates at the Telekom/T-mobile team have publically admitted to substance abuse, Ullrich last year only acknowledged that he had been in contact with Fuentes.
