End of season for Italy's Pozzato
Former Milan-San Remo champion Filippo Pozzato has been forced to bring his season to an early end due to inflammation on his right knee.
Pozzato, who rides for the Farnese Vini team, was set to compete on Sunday in the GP Beghelli, where he ended his 2011 season with victory in the one-day race.
But in comments reported by Italy's domestic news agency ANSA, he said the pain is too much: "Last week I started to feel a bit uncomfortable but I didn't want to stop... but today it's clear that I can't go on."
Pozzato was recently left off Italy's world championship team due to a three-month doping ban which also ended his Olympic participation hopes.
The ban, which ended on September 18, was to sanction his links to controversial sports doctor Michele Ferrari.
