Schleck withdrawal disappoints team manager

RadioShack Nissan manager Johan Bruyneel said he was "disappointed" by team leader Frank Schleck of Luxembourg's decision to abandon the Giro d'Italia.

Schleck, third in the Tour de France last year, pulled out during the 15th stage on Sunday as a result of a shoulder injury caused on stage 11. He had been lying 15th overall.

"My right shoulder has been hurt and dislocated and since I was sitting wrong on the bike, my left side was numb...I had to stop," Schleck said on the team's website.

"I can't say much... but I am surprised and disappointed with his abandonment," Bruyneel told Luxembourg radio station RTL.

"This morning I had hopes that he could finish on the podium, I thought he had a good enough condition to finish with the best."

Bruyneel said he expected Schleck's next races would be the Tour of Luxembourg and Tour de Suisse.

However, when asked if he would ride the Tour de France, he answered: "The selection for the Tour has not yet been decided."

The Giro d'Italia finishes on May 27 in Milan. Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez is the current leader.
