Bavuma lights up gloomy Wanderers

Temba Bavuma struck a half-century to help the bizhub Highveld Lions to 358 for six at stumps on the weather-affected second day of their SuperSport Series match against the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras at Bidvest Wanderers in Johannesburg on Friday.

Only 38 overs of play were possible during the day after rain and bad light had caused a delay of almost five hours during the morning and afternoon sessions before bad light once again intervened with seven overs still to be bowled in the day.

The outcome was not what the Cobras would have wanted after they began the match less than a point ahead of the Titans on the log standings. The Titans managed to score an incredible 11.46 bonus points in their match against the Dolphins while the Cobras have managed just two bowling bonus points.

The 21-year-old Bavuma, who began the day on 18, brought up his second fifty of the season, to go with three hundreds, off 84 balls before making his way to 64 with eight fours and a six before he was trapped leg-before by off-spinner Dane Piedt.

The Lions had resumed on 228 for four and Bavuma and Thami Tsolekile (20) took the score to 255 before Tsolekile was out lbw to seamer Vernon Philander.

The right-handed Bavuma and Cliffe Deacon added 62 runs for the sixth wicket before Bavuma’s dismissal.

Deacon and Chris Morris then put on an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 41 with Morris striking some lusty blows in his unbeaten 29 while Deacon was not out on 40.

Piedt was the most successful bowler with three wickets but he conceded 150 runs off his 29 overs at more than five runs to the over.
