Pallekele ODI rains out

With the rain pelting down and no respite in sight, the first of five one-day internationals between Sri Lanka and New Zealand was abandoned in Pallekele on Thursday.

Heavy rain throughout the day threatened the match to follow the same path as the Twenty20 international on Tuesday, which got under way, but had to abandoned after only 16 overs were possible.

The cut-off time for the match to get under way was 2:30pm CAT (SA, GMT+2), but the umpires had seen enough to make the call 45 minutes earlier.

The remaining four one-dayers will be played in Colombo (November 4 and 6) and Hambantota (November 10 and 12).

New Zealand and Sri Lanka will also play two tests after the one-day series.
