Sangakkara, White set up DC win

Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White shared a mammoth partnership as the Deccan Chargers beat the Pune Warriors by 13 runs in their IPL match at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Tuesday.

Full Scorecard

Sangakkara and White plundered 157 runs for the third wicket, the highest partnership of this year’s IPL, as Deccan posted a formidable 186 for four.

Pune, despite a 90-run second-wicket partnership between Sourav Ganguly and Michael Clarke, could only manage 173 for five.

The win was just the second for Deccan after nine matches and they are still rooted to the foot of the table.

Sangakkara weighed in with 82 off 52 balls while White romped to 74 off 45 deliveries as the pair’s partnership came up off just 14.2 overs.

The left-handed Sangakkara, who brought up his fifty off 38 balls, was initially rather circumspect on a low, slow pitch but he upped his run gathering in the 15th over when he slammed 20 runs off the bowling of off-spinner Marlon Samuels.

The 34-year-old Sangakkara eventually departed in the penultimate over when he was bowled by left-arm seamer Ashish Nehra after striking 10 fours and two sixes during his sparkling innings.

White was the initial aggressor in the massive stand, before Sangakkara found his range, but after reaching his half-century off 38 deliveries, the right-handed White went on the rampage and he plundered three consecutive sixes off the bowling of medium-pacer Ganguly.

White was dismissed in the last over of the innings when he sliced a Parnell delivery to long-on after hammering four fours and four sixes.

Deccan, after winning the toss and electing to bat, had limped to 58 for two after 10 overs but the Sangakkara/White assault meant that the home team scored 128 runs off the next 10 overs.

There had been a sensational start to the match when off-spinner Marlon Samuels, with the first ball of the game, bowled the left-handed Parthiv Patel (0) off an inside edge.

Seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar then bowled Shikhar Dhawan (13) as Deccan slipped to 23 for two before Sangakkara and White took control of the contest.

Parnell was the stand-out bowler and he finished with figures of 4-1-25-1 which could have been even better if keeper Robin Uthappa had not dropped White when the batsman had scored just 11.

Deccan lost a wicket off the first ball of their innings and the same happened to Pune when left-arm spinner Ankit Sharma had Manish Pandey (0) caught at mid-on.

Ganguly and Clarke then raised Pune’s hopes of pulling off a win before Clarke was run out at the keeper’s end after a comedy of errors.

Clarke skied a delivery from seamer Veer Pratap Singh to Dhawan at point, but when the fielder put the regulation catch down, Clarke decided to take a second run but could not beat the throw from Amit Mishra to keeper Patel.

The right-handed Clarke, playing in his first IPL match, was out for 41 off 31 deliveries and Ganguly, who scored 45 off 40 balls, departed in the next over when he chipped a delivery from part-time off-spinner Dhawan to White at mid-off.

Ganguly’s dismissal left Pune on 96 for three in the 13th over and Steve Smith tried his best to keep his team in the match with 47 not out off 27 balls but it was too little too late for the Warriors.
