Five-star Jadeja leads Chennai victory charge
Ravi Jadeja's inspired spell of left-arm spin claimed 5-16 as the Chennai Super Kings drubbed the Deccan Chargers by 74 runs in their Indian Premier League encounter at the Visakhapatnam Stadium on Saturday.
Jadeja's remarkable spell saw the Chargers rolled over for 119 inside 18 overs, as they failed miserably in their chase of the Super Kings' massive 193 for 6.
Dwayne Bravo had earlier clubbed 43 off just 18 balls, to add to Jadeja's 48 off 29 balls. None of the Chargers really got going, and it was left to the accurate Jadeja to run through the lower-order and secure a comfortable win for MS Dhoni's charges.
S Dhawan (21), Parthiv Patel (20) and Cameron White (23 off 16 balls) all threatened briefly, but none of them kicked on as the Deccan outfit was overwhelmed by tight bowling upfront from the rapid Doug Bollinger.
He ousted Daniel Harris in the fourth over, after a stand of 36 with Dhawan, before the latter also perished, snaffled by Dwayne Bravo off the bowling of Suresh Raina. White, the Chargers' captain, was their last real hope, and clubbed a brace of boundaries and a six before he holed out to Raina off the bowling of Jakati.
By then, the Chargers had slumped to 85 for 4, and that sparked the Jadeja show. He bowled Bharat Chipli, before accounting or Gony and Ravi Teja within three balls in the 14th over.
Ankit Sharma slogged two sixes to hold up the inevitable briefly, but Bollinger returned to blast him out, wrapping up a comprehensive win for the Super Kings.
The Super Kings had earlier made a grim start after bing sent in to bat, as they lost Murali Vijay in the first over, bowled by the spin of Ankit Sharma for two. That brought together Suresh Raina and Faf du Plessis, with the South African blasting a pair of sixes off Mantreet Gony to up the run rate.
Raina, who had looked comfortable in getting to 16 off a dozen balls, was caught and bowled by Daniel Christian as he tried to heave over midwicket. Du Plessis, who bludgeoned another pair of sixes, then holed out to long-on, as he tried to lift Sudhindra into the stands. His 39 came off just 25 balls.
It was 94 for 4 by the 13th over, as Badrinath slapped Christian to point, to depart for 25 off 20 balls. All the while, Jadeja was blasting away at the other end, as he compiled a rapid 48 off 29 balls, with three fours and as many sixes.
Skipper Dhoni fell for just seven, as he tried to loft Dale Steyn over mid-off. Jadeja fell in the 18th over, but Bravo blasted five sixes, including three off the final over, to add a searing 46 in the last two and a half overs with Albie Morkel.
Ultimately, though, the Chargers were outplayed, with Jadeja enjoying a wonderful day with bat and ball to claim the man of the match honours.
