David Miller's defiant 41 off 34 balls kept the Dolphins interested until the last over, but once he was run out, the game was up for the home side, who eventually ended on 122 for eight. The Dolphins will look back to a laboured start in their chase, when they could only muster 37 for three in their first ten overs.
Neil McKenzie (56 off 38 balls) and Temba Bavuma (20 off 24 balls) had earlier played some sparkling strokes, as the visitors cantered to their half-century in 6.1 overs, with the Dolphins guilty of some very loose bowling upfront.
McKenzie clubbed six fours and a six, as he reached his fifty off 34 balls. But the wheels dramatically fell off for the Lions as Robbie Frylinck helped himself to career-best figures of 5-16. That haul included three wickets in one over, as the Lions capitulated to 129 all out in 18.2 overs, losing their last six wickets for just eleven runs.
Mthokozisi Shezi (2-18) and Prenelan Subrayen (2-34) gave handy support to Frylinck with the ball, and the Dolphins would have fancied their chances of scoring 130 to win on what was a belter of a T20 wicket.
But they didn't make the brightest start, losing Khaya Zondo and Cody Chetty early, before Jonathan Vandiar (19 off 36 balls) struggled to get Chris Morris and Hardus Viljoen away. That saw the Dolphins' asking rate climb to ten an over by the11th over.
Miller, who was held back to bat at six, had a lot to do when he came in, as the Dolphins needed 92 off 58 balls. Vaughn van Jaarsveld (26 off 21 balls) tried to help Miller along as they added 33, but they got going far too late into their innings.
Morris (2-14) was impeccable with the ball, while Aaron Phangiso throttled the Dolphins in the middle overs, with 1-20.
By the time Sohail Tanveer bowled the final over, the Dolphins required 18 to win. As soon as Miller was run out off the second ball, the game was over even though Frylinck clubbed the last ball into the stands to make the final result a little closer.
Frylinck was named Bowler of the Match, while McKenzie was Batsman of the Match for his classy 56.
