Rain spoils final, replay on Saturday

The Momentum One Day Cup Final between the bizhub Highveld Lions and the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday has been abandoned due to heavy rain.

Full scorecard – Lions v Cape Cobras

The Cobras were stuttering on 64 for four when the heavens opened for the second time, with Yaseen Vallie (21 not out) and Cobras captain Justin Ontong (12 not out) trying to rebuild the innings.

Lions captain Stephen Cook had earlier won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Hardus Viljoen made the perfect start when he had Andrew Puttick (3) caught at second slip, Alviro Peterson taking a brilliant one-handed catch, low down to his right.

Six tuns later, Viljoen struck again when he removed the dangerous Richard Levi (11), caught by Neil McKenzie at second slip. At the fall of Levi's wicket, the umpires, Johan Cloete and Marais Erasmus, took the players off the field, with the Cobras on 22 for two.

Two balls after the resumption of play, Viljoen struck, trapping Dane Villas in front without scoring. Viljoen grabbed his fourth wicket of the match, and 20th of the campaign, when he had Stiaan van Zyl (12) caught behind, after being struck for two consecutive leg-side boundaries. At 36 for four, the Cobras were in all sorts of trouble.

Ontong and Vallie guided the visitors to 64 for four before a heavy thunderstorm arrived, forcing the players from the field for a second time. The players were not able to return to the field of play, and the match was officially abandoned.

Pumelela Matshikwe provided perfect support for Viljoen, conceding only 22 runs in seven overs, while Viljoen's four wickets cost him 37 runs off seven overs. Imran Tahir and Zander de Bruyn only bowled 14 balls between them before the heavens opened up.

The final will be replayed on Saturday, starting at 10am at the same venue. The Lions will be highly disappointed at the turn of events as they had their coastal rivals on the ropes.

The Cobras on the other hand will be delighted, as this will enable them to regroup and perhaps produce a better showing than they did on Friday.
