Cobras coast past Titans, host semi

A fantastic century from Richard Levi set up victory for the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras over the Nashua Titans by 111 runs in their Momentum One Day Cup match at Boland Park in Paarl on Wednesday.

Full Scorecard – Cape Cobras v Titans

The Titans were set a target of 317 from 50 overs, which would have been a record at the ground should they have reached it. Their chase did not begin as they had wanted as Johan Louw struck in the fifth over, having Henry Davids caught by Andrew Puttick at a short mid-wicket for seven.

Lizaad Williams, who opened the bowling in place of the injured Charl Langeveldt, had Heino Kuhn (10) trapped lbw in the next over. The Titans were scoring at just over four runs to the over, needing to score at over six.

After 10 overs, the visitors had plodded along to 44 for two with Mangaliso Mosehle and Roelof van der Merwe at the crease. The pair took the batting power play after 12 overs, looking to push the rate up, but only managed to score 27 runs with the loss of Van der Merwe's wicket.

Van der Merwe (16) was brilliantly caught on the long-on boundary by Yaseen Vallie off the bowling of Justin Kemp.

The Titans captain then strode to the crease to join Mosehle and the pair added 71 for the fourth wicket. Mosehle was dropped by Dane Piedt, who was on the field for Langeveldt, off the bowling of Justin Ontong when he was on 45. Luckily for the home team, the missed chance did not cost much, as Mosehle was eventually trapped lbw by Ontong for a well played 54 off 62 balls, which included six boundaries and two huge sixes.

Piedt was to have a nightmare evening in the field, as shortly after the departure of Mosehle, he dropped Martin van Jaarsveld on 39. Again it did not cost the Cobras as Ontong had his man caught by Vallie, another brilliant catch on the boundary, for 44 off 43 balls.

At 144 for five, The Titans were never to recover as Ferhaan Berhardien (15), Albie Morkel (12), CJ de Villiers (1) and the big hitting David Wiese (10) were not able to get going.

The man who returned from injury, Kemp, was yet again the pick of the Cobras attack, as he claimed 3-49 from 10 overs. Ontong (2-35) and leg-spinner Alistair Gray (2-38) bowled extremely well in tandem as they went for around five to the over.

Williams revelled in his new position of opening bowler. The youngster claimed 2-21 from 6.1 overs and bowled with pace and venom.

Levi played a typically aggressive, yet mature innings of 166 off 138 balls, which included 12 fours and six sixes, which enabled the Cobras to reach 316 for seven off their allotted 50 overs, after Justin Ontong had won the toss and decided to bat first.

Levi, who received the man-of-the-match award, and Puttick (46) added 158 for the first wicket off 24.2 overs, which was followed up with a 108-run partnership for the second wicket between Levi and Stiaan van Zyl (59). Van Zyl struck five boundaries in his 63-ball knock, before the wheels came off the Cobras' innings.

Once Van Zyl was out, caught off the bowling of JP de Villiers, wickets tumbled with alarming pace. Ontong (0) was run out, followed by Dane Vilas (5), Kemp (6) and Vallie (9).

Johann Louw had some fun with the only ball he faced, the last of the innings, as he slammed the ball into the banks for six.

CJ de Villiers was the pick of the Titans attack with 2-29 from five overs while JP de Villiers's two wickets cost 70 runs off nine overs. Van der Merwe and David each picked up a wicket for a combined total of 73 runs off 14 overs.

Wiese was removed from the attack early on as his three overs were slaughtered for 28 runs.

The Cobras will now host the semifinal on Sunday, at Sahara Park Newlands in Cape Town, against the self same Titans team, as the Sunfoil Dolphins were not able to overcome the Chevrolet Warriors in East London.

The match on Sunday starts at 10am.
